CAMP NELSON CIVIL WAR HERITAGE PARK - CLASSES, EVENTS & CAMPOUTS

It was not only a great ghost hunt (for both the experienced and novice spirit chaser), but it was historically informational and would be enjoyable for any person interested in Kentucky Civil War history. We definitely HIGHLY recommend people make the time to take your tour.
Craig and Elizabeth Gorham, Winchester

Starr is working with the Camp Nelson Restoration and Preservation Foundation to provide an opportunity for them to raise much needed money for their ongoing restoration and preservation efforts of the historic Camp Nelson Civil War Heritage Park. We are now booking ghost walks, EVP & Dowsing classes, and overnight campouts on the property.

Private ghost tours are available during the week. Contact us for more information.

Important Notice Regarding Camp Nelson

We were recently contacted by the Property Manager at Camp Nelson that there have been unauthorized people on the grounds doing ghost hunting... this is a big NO NO. Any unauthorized persons found on the property will cause the authorities to be contacted, and park personnel will be keeping records of license plate numbers as well, in case those persons leave before the authorities arrive. I have but one thing to say to those who are doing this... SHAME ON YOU! This is a historic place, not a playground! The tours there are for the benefit of Camp Nelson as a fundraiser, so if you feel the need to partake in an investigation you can contact us to arrange one. If you are the type of person who would rather have their fun and abuse common courtesy, then please find somewhere else to visit. Camp Nelson is a great historical treasure, and we don't want to see a few bad apples ruin it for everyone else. If you live around Camp Nelson, or are a visitor to Camp Nelson, and see this kind of thing happening, please feel free to take down the license number of the vehicles present and contact us so the proper authorities can be notified.

Thank you for your time. I'm sorry we had to post this, but this activity cannot be tolerated. We hope we have your support for keeping Camp Nelson's tours open for everyone who abides by the rules.

A Brief History of Camp Nelson

Camp Nelson was founded and constructed by Major General Ambrose Burnside's 9th Corps of the Army of the Ohio in June 1863. It was closed in June 1866. It played a vital part in the Civil War, providing a supply center for Union troops, a training center for new recruits, and a refugee camp for slaves who enlisted. Eight regiments of U.S. Colored Troops, as the African-American regiments were designated, were founded at Camp Nelson, and three others were trained there. This number makes Camp Nelson the largest African-American recruitment camp in Kentucky and the third largest in the nation.

Besides its general everyday supply functions, Camp Nelson was also critical in the support of a number of offensive campaigns into Tennessee and Virginia. Although not particularly dramatic, these quartermaster and commissary functions were vital to the survival and success of the Union Army.

The Camp Nelson Ghost Hunting Experience

This event will lead you on an actual ghost hunt on the Camp Nelson Civil War Heritage Park property, including the barracks, the brig, the refugee cemetery, and earthen forts. You will learn how to recognize instances of these communications, and even how to encourage them. We have received many communications during ghost hunts by way of our cameras, tape & digital recorders, and camcorders. This class will show you how to do the same, by applying the correct principals of communication as well as ways to interpret and share this information. Open to anyone 16 or older. Directions to Camp Nelson Civil War Heritage Park

From the North, take US 27 (Nicholasville Road) south. You will follow this all the way to Camp Nelson. You will pass Nicholasville. Just past mile marker 3, look for a brown highway sign that points out the turn off for Camp Nelson Civil War Heritage Park (NOT the Cemetery); the turn will be to the left and will dead-end into an access road that runs parallel to US 27. Turn right onto the access road (this is marked by a sign as well), follow it about a 1/8 mile to Camp Nelson. On your left you will see the White House, then two iron gates which will be open, and a placard on the brick face that says Camp Nelson. Park in the parking lot between the White House and the Interpretive Center (the gray barn-like building). Check in is at the Interpretive Center.

From the South, take US 27 north. You will follow this all the way to Camp Nelson. You will cross a large bridge that goes over the Kentucky River and enter Jessamine County. At this point begin looking on your right for the turn off for Camp Nelson Civil War Heritage Park (NOT the Cemetery). After making the right turn off of US 27, you will immediately turn left onto the access road that runs parallel to US 27, follow it about a 1/4 mile to Camp Nelson. On your right you will see the two iron gates which will be open, and a placard on the brick face that says Camp Nelson. Park in the parking lot between the White House and the Interpretive Center (the gray barn-like building). Check in is at the Interpretive Center.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear for the Camp Nelson Ghost Hunting Experience?

Dress for the weather. We will run this event from March through October and sometimes it can get pretty chilly out there. Wear shoes that are easy and comfortable to walk in; we walk where there are no trails, and there are hills, dips and rocks.

Can someone in a motorized wheelchair participate in the Camp Nelson Ghost Hunting Experience?

Due to the terrain of the area, persons in motorized wheelchairs cannot navigate the tour. We are very sorry.

Is this a staged kind of haunted tour?

Absolutely not. The Camp Nelson Ghost Hunting Experience is a real tour of a real Civil War Depot where real soldiers and civilians died. There will be no one in costumes jumping out at you, there are no staged theatrics. The paranormal activity at Camp Nelson is real, and we do have many people who experience it during the tours. We have had participants that have been touched, pinched, and have had their hair stroked, so be prepared for what you may encounter.
